Concrete is used in a wide range of applications along the coast. In ports and harbours, we find concrete forming the main structural body of quays, either in the form of caissons, blockwork or diaphragm walls structures.
Even where other forms of construction are used to form the substructures, concrete is invariably used for the decks of these quays.
Concrete may be used in both its reinforced and mass forms. In many situations, a large mass of material is required either to resist wave forces or to provide adequate foundations for a very substantial ship or crane landings. Concrete has the advantage of being less vulnerable to chloride related corrosion or to the abrasive forces generated from beaches.
