Sustainability is about ensuring that development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
When analysing sustainable developments, one must look at the overall impact of that development not only at the time of its construction but also its wider impact on the environment during its lifetime.
Precast concrete has the advantages of a vast majority of materials used on its composition being locally sourced and in the case of CCP this majority is also largely from secondary sources such as waste material from the extraction of china clay.
In addition, by choosing precast as a solution, many of the traditional hazards associated with site works are removed and dealt with in the more controlled factory environment.
Noise, dust and wastage onsite are dramatically reduced by choosing this more cost effective means of production. Precast manufacturers are also able to produce more slender structures and hence use less valuable resources.
Furthermore, by utilizing precast concrete within the fabric of the building, the benefits of thermal mass can be enjoyed.
Cornish Concrete Products take our impact on the environment very seriously. Thus, we continually try to source materials to reduce our environmental impact and utilise scarce resources more effectively.
To this end we were founder signatories to the British Precast sector sustainability charter (www.britishprecast.org/sustainableprecast)
We use 100% secondary sourced aggregates in our concrete, grey water recycling, 100% recycled steel reinforcement and we are currently undertaking full scale production trials with cement substitutes suitable for use in precast concrete.
We are currently carrying out the necessary stops to attain ISO 14001 which will be completed by 2009.
We are proud to state that over 70% of the material in our concrete products come from secondary sources and we are hoping to increase that to over 80% before the turn of the decade.
