This design and build bridge for Devon County Council spans 200 metres of the Walkham Valley over the River Walkham at a height of 24 metres. It replaces the original Gem bridge, built by Brunel in circa 1891 and demolished in the 1950s.

The new Gem bridge has a concrete deck with steel lattice girder arrangement supported on slender precast concrete columns.

The superstructure itself is formed from box section steelwork, which was fabricated off site with the deck constructed from precast decking units, with an insitu stitch pour after installation.
